We delivered a very successful Special World Cup 2018 at London Marathon Playing Fields, 304 Shooters Hill Rd, SE18 4LT on Thursday, May 17th.
About 200 young people with learning and associated disabilities took part.
The main part of the festival was a Championship style tournament where 14 teams took part representing some of the teams of the World Cup. Each team was sponsored by a local business.
The names of the country were in the front of the shirts and the sponsors name on the back.
The winning team represented France and was sponsored by Decathlon. Soon to be opening in Greenwich Shopping Park, Charlton. Paul Elliott CBE, our patron, presented the winners with a replica world Cup and the sponsors also received a miniature world cup.
To ensure as much inclusion as possible there was a Plate tournament. This was won by Mexico, sponsored by The Embankment Marina, (Gravesend) Ltd!
There was a parallel Mini special world Cup for students with more severe learning disabilities. This was won by our own Charlton Park Academy.
A primary tournament was won by Bromley Trust Academy. Councillor Mick Hayes presented this award. He is to be the Deputy Mayor of Royal Greenwich in 2018-2019
Our Chairperson, Len Duvall OBE (Assembly member for Greenwich and Lewisham) attended the tournament and said that it was an absolutely fabulous day for these youngsters where they could achieve in the same way as their non-disabled peers.
