Female Tournament

South East Regional five-a-side Football Disability Competition
Sunday 25th June (Adult Female) – Venue: Reading FC

Having traveled by mini bus early in the morning the team was in good spirits and looking forward to the competition. Our First game was against the All Stars football team which was made up from a combination of counties. We were losing 1-0 and came back to win 2-1 with great goals coming from Sophie Hobbs, and a direct kick straight into the goal from the kick off from Becky. Our goalkeeper Amy Hepden made a great start to the day.
Our second game was against Marlow Gateway from Buckinghamshire and we really played some good football and won 6-1. The game started with Amy in goal tipping a shot over the bar from the Marlow Gateway centre forward. Sophie scored a fantastic 4 goals in this match and was on great form and Georgina scored 2 wearing her new blue astro-turf boots but was injured and had to come off the field of play.

When we finished that game we remained on the pitch to play our third game and lost against Northampton Town 3-1 with the only goal coming from Toni who worked so hard in this game. Christine had a great chance in this game to score when she run up the field and called to Sophie to pass the ball across and unfortunately the ball was going so fast and Christine could not control it. Chrissie had another chance in the game and while trying to shoot was stopped by a defender and got injured herself and was substituted.

Our next game was the Semi final against the All Stars team. What a great performance by Amy, Toni, Becky and Sophie in this game. Tactically we had nailed this game by defending so well and attacked on the break. Our break came when Toni ran with the ball beating a few players on the way before unleashing a powerful shot that beat the All Stars goalkeeper. It was a great victory which put us into the final!!! Christine had recovered from her injury and was waiting to come on to give Becky or Toni a break but the opportunity did not arise so we saved her for the final!
The final was against Northampton Town and this game was nail biting and could have been won by either team. Amy pulled off some fantastic saves once again that kept us in this game. One time their striker kicked the ball which Amy saved and the striker tried again and once again Amy saved it and for the third time the striker hit it and Amy saved it again!!! All of the spectators applauded those saves. We had chances to put the ball away but equally the Northampton goalkeeper made some good saves too. Both sides played so well and our captain Toni was urging her players to keep going. Becky and Christine were outstanding in this game stopping the Northampton Town strike force with Toni working so hard in midfield and Sophie trying to get through their defence. Georgina came back on in the final but her injury she received in the earlier match took its toil. In the eighth minute of the game the Northampton striker, who had a very good tournament, unleashed a left foot shot that Amy could only get a hand to and then it went into the back of the net. We lost 1-0.

What a fantastic effort from the Terriers and Josie Clifford their coach said “I was very proud of the way they performed and conducted their selves on and off the field of play”.
