After five weeks of training, with four schools from SE London and Kent, South London Special League held their first Tag Rugby Tournament on the 9th December at Blackheath Rugby Training Ground, Kidbrooke Lane, Eltham, SE9 6TE. 38 students from four schools participated in this exciting competition; 14 from Glebe School; 7 from Helen Allison School; 7 from Rowhill School and 10 from Woodside school.
Glebe School entered two teams who, under the watchful eye of Blackheath first Rugby team player, James Cleverly both managed to reach the final. After an exciting competition Glebe A were able to celebrate as the winning team.
It was a great event, enabling children of ages 11-16, of different ethnic groups and ability levels to take part in a challenging new game. The young people thoroughly enjoyed themselves, as they increased their social skills and worked together to improve their understanding of the activity.
The Special League would like to thank Trevor Martingill from the Tag Rugby Trust who lead this new initiative comprising of five training sessions and one competition. He was supported by students from Greenwich Community College who are working towards sporting qualifications.
We look forward to developing this opportunity further by establishing of a mini league, starting in the new year.
